CHAPTER 13

Perry rushed into Brimly's office at the Babylonian Chronicle office with the story she and Mercedes had discussed in her hand. She was surprised to find Duncan, their Senior Staff Editor for the paper present and with a copy of her story in hand. He and Brimly stopped talking when she emerged. She wished she had caught a word or two of their conversation but wasn't so fortunate.

“Cate!” Brimly shouted at her. “Close the door and get in here. We need to talk about this.”

She closed the door and came between Brimly and Duncan. “Yes? So? Will it print?”

“Why should I?” Brimly asked.

“Why should you?” Perry replied. “Because it's huge.”

“No,” Brimly started, “It's speculation at best and pure fiction at worst. Why should I drag Babylon's finest through the mud like this?”

Duncan grinned, his teeth stained from years of coffee and cigars. Perry tried her best to ignore him.

“This isn't dragging them through the mud,” Perry explained, “It's connecting dots! Dots they aren't willing to connect for the public. It appears we have a serial killer on our hands, preying on our youth, and the police haven't even acknowledged it publicly!”

“I just don't know that I want to drag them through the mud like this,” Brimly reprised his old point.

“Look,” Perry said, “Nobody's dragging anyone through the mud. I contacted the detective in charge of both cases, a detective Carter, and he refused to give me a comment or say anything for that matter. They know this story is going to print, it's on them if they don't like it. They had every opportunity to refute the story. If that isn't--”

“Stop talking.” Brimly interrupted. “Why did Masterson request you?”

“I don't know,” Perry said, “She called me and requested I write the story. I don't know why she picked me.”

“You should've explained to her that you don't work for the paper, and that this isn't your type of work.” Brimly said and gestured to Duncan with the story in his hand. “You should have directed her to Duncan here, he's our Senior Staff writer for the paper. He has been for years.”

Perry glared at Duncan. “I know who Duncan is, Mr. Brimly,” she turned back to her boss, “But she wouldn't take no for answer and she demanded it hit the print tomorrow morning, or she'd take her story elsewhere.”

Brimly moved his mustache around with his mouth, a tick that indicated that he was actually giving it some thought. Some serious consideration. “That bitch. For years we've been trying to get an interview out of her, or hell, even a damn quote. And then this malarkey. She calls up here, requests a damn rookie blogger, and makes demands about what we print and when we print it like she owns the place.”

Perry, without thinking, chided Brimly. “I'm not a blogger.”

Brimly looked at her with an expression of shock at her retort. “You're whatever the goddamn hell I say you are!” he said with the uttermost disdain. The room fell silent. Even Duncan wasn't smiling.
